Time To Party With Classic Mario by ProfessorMegaman Time To Party With Classic Mario by ProfessorMegaman
And now something with a bit wider appeal.

I took the iconic image of Mario from Mario Party 9 and I retro-ized him back to his classic appearance. Many key changes of note are his short, stubbier limbs, his mor rotund physique, cartoon-ish pupils, his curvier moustache and the classic red pants with blue shirt.

I've always liked the RED-BLUE-RED composition on classic Mario. Artistically, it's more fetching to the eye.

I miss the old red overalls.  I always liked that look better.  Just a minor thing though, if you really wanted to go all out retro, you would have made his hair black to match the 'stache.  I've never got why they changed that either.

Actually, his hair was brown in the original Famicom-era art. It was the American Super Mario Bros/ Super Mario Bros. 2 merchandise that depicted him with black hair.

Apparently they got back on the same page for Super Mario Bros. 3.

It's nice to see the classic red overalls/dungarees and blue shirt Mario, honestly :)

This is amazing. It looks like an interesting blend between the classic and modern art styles: Excellent work, I know I'd love to see more of this.

classic Mario seems to be chubbier than the new Mario

their should be a game that has both classic mario and super mario
ProfessorMegaman Featured By Owner Oct 17, 2013  Hobbyist Traditional Artist
Sounds like it would be a fan-pleasing novelty, but I can't imagine how it would play. 3-D and 2-D Mario are so drastically different. They could do a Sonic Generations-type of thing, but I think it would strengthen the divide even more.

I think they should just make a Super Mario Bros. 3 in full-fledged 8-Bit style ala' Megaman 9. It makes sense. Megaman 9 faithfully recreated the feel of fan-favorite title Megaman 2, the new Zelda game resonates with the original Link to the Past... Surely Mario deserves the same treatment.

I dunno, man. They could change 2-D Mario's controls for the one game?
ProfessorMegaman Featured By Owner Jul 15, 2014  Hobbyist Traditional Artist
I hear Mario Maker is going to have the option to switch between 8-Bit and New Super Mario Bros. style graphics, but will play with 8-Bit physics regardless.

NSMB with NES style controls... sounds like a dream come true.
Now if only they could do something about the music...

It's still in development, what we were shown was only a little demo, don't worry, there should be more features. c:

2d mario could be side scolling, while 3d mario could be like 3d land

Heh "classic mode"? Awesome work here
mewmewspike Featured By Owner Feb 20, 2013
Nice. I hope to someday se art of Mario with his blue hat and overalls with red shirt and even Luigi with green hat and overalls with brown shirt, their outfits from the Mario Bros. arcade game.

That and I always liked his voice from both the classic cartoons and the movie (Lou Albano, Walker Boone, and Bob Hoskins respectivly). Back when Mario had a 'Brooklynish' accent
Now he has this god awful Italian stereotypical accent. Ever since I first heard him utter his first word on Super Mario 64 I couldn't keep myself from cringing every time he opens his mouth. Yeesh.
Are Mario and Luigi even FROM Brooklyn anymore?

Anyhow, great work. *favs*

No, and they're not plumbers either, I think.

I like Charles Martinet, but I wish they wouldn't insist on making Mario sound like a creepy pull-string doll.

But too much voicework would be even worse, so I say no voices whatsoever.

I like the voice Charles Martinet gives to Wario, that kind of talent mixed with how they make the character out as this disgusting selfish asshole makes him a riot to me.

Y'know, in a way I kinda miss his old color scheme to. (You rarely ever see red overalls in real life nowadays.) Nice work on this. :)
MotorRoach Featured By Owner Feb 1, 2013
This feels like a new old school version of Mario in a way, since the design has that classic look to it but it's still Mario.

Give me memories of the old cartoons too. :P

I always thought Sonic had the more drastic redesign between him and the Mario Bros., but why should that matter here? This is swell!
