Artist's Comments

I recently acquired a cool Dragon Quest strategy guide from Japan teeming with rare artwork. Naturally I couldn't help but try my hand at some DQ fan art.

I've always been fond of the original Dragon Quest. (or Dragon Warrior as it was known on the American NES) And yet it seems somewhat neglected among the fan community. You wouldn't believe how hard it was to find DQ1 artwork on the net (official and fan).

I have a tendency to make art for for nostalgic games that seem sorely limited in fan art.

I like how made the face of dragon really personified.
Even though this is Dragon Quest fan art, I just can't help to think that this is an allusion to other Nintendo games.

I tried to stay true to the Akira Toriyama art style as I could. Any other NES games in particular?

The word "should" refers to a perfect world we build up in our own minds where everything goes as we want it to.

Welci - the cute and new way of saying welcome!

Use "Welci" instead of welcome and create an internet phenomon that gets the cute little word it's own page on Wikipedia! Just remember where it came from...ME! ^_^

Zelda, and Mario.

Zelda because of the warrior, and Mario because of the fact that there is a princess waiting to be saved from an evil dragon, and the resemblance of the princess to "daisy the princess."
Really lame of course, but I can't deny I found those aspects visible in this piece.

There's definitely a similarity between Laura (or Gwaelin to the Dragon Warrior crowd) and Princess Daisy of Super Mario Land/Mario Party fame.

Recalling my days flipping through Nintendo Power magazine, there were an abundance of NES games featuring knights in shining armor. And a lot of them were really good. It's a wonder why many modern RPGs don't stick to the medieval theme. It's got quite an impressive batting average.

I think the reason to that misfortune is the fact that current pop. culture lost the taste for the medieval fever with so many new video game epics floating in the market, and the fact the "medieval" feels cliché nowadays since it is over-used in movies like "Shrek," "Red-Sonja," and many more.

:iconprofessormegaman:
In the 80's Japanese pop culture incorporated many western influences like punk rock, sports cars, Miami Vice-style protagonists, and in terms of fantasy, medieval folk lore.

These days Japanese is just as screwed up and nonsensical as American pop culture so it's hard to say where it draws it's influences from. Actually, that's not true. Modern pop culture draws inspiration from pre-existing pop culture. It's like a xerox of a xerox. So the massive decline in quality is very understandable.
